The MAF Madagascar programme's new Country Director shares what he loves about this island nation.

It is a long journey from growing up in France to becoming the new Country Director for MAF in Madagascar, but it feels a natural step for Michael Jurgensen.

After a spell as Deputy Country Director, Michael took on the responsibility for leading the programme in October 2023 and he is relishing the opportunity of serving the people of Madagascar. “My family and I are very happy to be able to serve the Lord and the people of Madagascar,” said Michael. “I really love the people here. The first thing I noticed when I got here was the smiles and people’s will to take up a challenge.”

The climate in the capital Antananarivo, located in the highlands, is one of his favourite things along with the island’s remarkable wildlife and landscapes. “The diversity of everything in Madagascar, whether it be the landscapes or vegetation, truly amazes me,” he said.

A long journey

Michael's journey to MAF traces back to his teenage years when he received newsletters from MAF France. The idea of using technical skills, particularly flying, to serve those in remote and isolated regions was astonishing to him. But, what inspired him were the stories of pilots, programme directors, and passengers he encountered in those newsletters. Michael's heart was set on being part of this team. “It took several twists and turns in my personal and professional life to find myself sitting in this office today and I am so grateful for this opportunity,” said Michael.

From being a civil servant teacher in Burkina Faso in his early 20s to becoming a flight ops manager at the International Red Cross to working in the Purchasing and Logistics department at Amac Aerospace, Michael has a wide range of skills that he uses today. “I think it’s the fact that I worked on an international basis, meaning I had international colleagues and had to communicate with providers that were based every around the world. That really helped me develop my work skills and knowledge,” he said.

A new beginning

Now, as Country Director of MAF Madagascar, Michael ensures every department has access to the resources and support required to accomplish their tasks effectively. He also serves as the representative of MAF in Madagascar, acting as a liaison with authorities, including the Civil Aviation of Madagascar. “My role also involves bridging connections, seeking new partners, and strengthening partnerships with those who have been working with us for years,” he said. “It is through our close collaboration with our partners that we can reach even the most remote and isolated regions of Madagascar.”

It is truly gratifying to witness the impact we have on those living in remote areas, thanks to our aviation resources and the skills of our staff.

Michael has settled in Madagascar with his wife, Betty, who is a registered nurse, and daughter Eliana. “My goal, when we arrived here, was really to support him and be a source of inspiration,” Betty shared.  “I also offered first aid training during training day last year. It was great to be able to use my knowledge to assist the team as I can.”
